{best} Case of the Mondays: Johanna Long

We all know Mondays suck.
Each week, I will feature a Monday in the life of someone who can provide some comfort/humor/inspiration to the start of your week.

Meet Johanna Long!

Johanna is a NASCAR driver, with experience in the NASCAR Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series-- and was the youngest female driver to compete in the Xfinity Series.

Hello there... Here's a look at a normal Monday for me. I competed this past weekend in Pensacola in a local race. Unfortunately I got wrecked on lap 20, so it wasn't a great day on the track. I'm working hard right now to stay mentally focused and physically fit as I look for my next opportunity on the track. I recently moved back to Mooresville, NC from Nashville - so I'm still adjusting to my new community. Mondays are a bit of a "catch up" day for me - just like most people trying to get back in the groove!

6am
Up and at it! No time for snoozing. Straight to make coffee and lunch for my fiance. He is always running late on Monday’s so no time for me to be dragging. I take our dog Lucy out for a little potty break.
8:30am
I go straight to the kitchen.. My go-to is a protein bar and a cup of coffee to start my day. Lucy is trying to get a bite out of my protein bar so I feed her at the same time. Then I try to “tidy” up around the house while I am finally getting energy to get out and about.

9:30am
I started a Women's Bible Study last Monday. They always meet on Mondays at 9:30am to start the week off right. Really helps get through the week with a more positive attitude.

11:30am
I start getting “hangry” and I start thinking about lunch. I try to choose healthier options so I usually go home and make lunch.

12:15pm
By this time Lucy is needing to get out of the house and run around. She is a Weimaraner and has lots of energy! I try to walk her about a mile or two near our apartment.

1:45pm
We are gone almost every weekend at race tracks around the country, so that means I have loads of laundry to do. I usually take time to get all of it done so we can start the week fresh.

3pm
At this point we have ZERO groceries... I try to make a list of things we will need to get through the week. Which usually includes: milk, lunch meat, cheese, chips, FRUIT. I also get dinner options. I am not a great cook so things usually stay the same week after week...ha!

4:30pm
IT'S GYM TIME. I have been going to Burn Boot Camp which is extremely hard but for some reason I keep going back :) This class usually is 45 mins long but extremely hardcore.  As a driver, it's important to stay fit, and cardio is something I like to incorporate into my days!
5:45pm
I start getting a plan together in the kitchen and cooking away. Doesn’t take very long to prepare the food I could because its usually “Hamburger Helper”. Awful cook! I am very lucky if I make it out of the kitchen without any burns.
7pm
Time to clean up the mess. I usually just do the dishes and make sure all the coffee cups are ready the for next day!

7:45pm
Winding down with the news or sometimes even a movie! I also check in on my social media pages during this time. I have a lot of really awesome fans that have really supported me in my career!
9:15pm
BED TIME! I hit the hay early so I can wake up tomorrow ready to take on the day!

Keep up with Johanna on and off the track:

{best} Case of the Mondays: Terri Stickle

We all know Mondays suck.
Each week, I will feature a Monday in the life of someone who can provide some comfort/humor/ inspiration to the start of your week.

Meet Terri Stickle!

Position | Company: I am the VP of Operations at Rose & Womble Realty

One word to describe Mondays to you?  New.  Everyday is completely different….especially Mondays.

5:45am
Awake to Bryce's alarm (my son), not once, not twice, third time is a charm.

6:15am
Grinding of the coffee beans…then the aroma of fresh brew coffee (Starbucks-Sumatra).  I really should get up.

6:16am
Gary’s alarm goes off.  My sweet husband, religiously goes downstairs and gets me coffee.  This time I really need to get up…and to beat Gary to the shower.  This is especially true in the winter when we are all vying for the hot water within the same time and really motivates me to get up and in the shower!

7:30am
Plan what’s for dinner.  I take pleasure in feeding the family.  Sunday through Thursday I plan dinners.  Fridays are my nights off and Saturday I wing it.  Tonight, Chicken Marsala.  Need to defrost the chicken.

7:45am
Start my 50 minute commute to the office, I live in Southern Chesapeake and work in Virginia Beach.  I start making phone calls during this time (Bluetooth guys….safety first)
8:35am
In the office. I check in with the others about their weekend.  Check emails, return VM.  Need to work on end of month reports then appointments.  First one is at 10:00 AM.  Every day is completely different.  Some days are spent in the offices and others are spent driving around our 10 offices or outside appointments.  My favorite part of my job is spending time with our agents, title people and loan officers.  They truly are the ones that make the magic happen!

2:00pm
I am starving.  I normally don’t eat breakfast typically eat around 12:30, but had too many appointments.  Tomato soup with basil, my fav. I start drinking water throughout the day.

4:00pm
I am Chairman of Rose & Womble’s Foundation.  We have been fortunate enough to have the support of the community that has made us #1 in Hampton Roads.  We are committed to return the favor and help those that are less fortunate in the community.  We have a meeting to purchase 1000 meals for Thanksgiving.  We have done fundraisers all year, and accept donations through Paypal.

5:00pm
Stay clear of the door, everyone leaves.  I finish of some computer work, and make the last of phone calls and leave.

6:20pm
Check in with everyone and we chat about our day.  Bryce is going to work out and my daughter Kaitlin is bartending tonight.

6:45pm
I change and get Kane (Kaitlin’s dog) ready for a walk (2 bags included because one is never enough!)
7:30pm
Back home and time to start dinner.  Bryce gets home around 7:45 and Gary is starving..

8:45pm
Clean up the kitchen and prepare the coffee for the morning.

9:15pm
Bryce’s birthday is coming up and I am researching online for a gift.  He is so easy to buy for.  Wednesday is his birthday and I need to coordinate the celebration.  My mother always made it a point to make sure our birthdays were special, because she felt like it was OUR special day.  I have tried to continue the tradition.
10:00pm
Kaitlin comes home and we talk about her night

11:00pm
Bedtime… prayers and I normally fall asleep before I finish.  Goodnight!

Nothing out of the ordinary for the day.   I love my life.  I have a great balance of a job that I enjoy and family and friends that I love. I am blessed.

Whole30 Recap.

Although my posts have been slacking from my Whole30 journey (See Week 1 & 2)... it doesn't reflect on my progress!

Last week, I finished 30 grueling days of NO Sugar. Beans. Grains. Alcohol. Processed food.

Which included engagement celebrations, work events and family functions (in which i really, really needed a bev or 12), but I steered clear of the overly processed, sugar laden foods.

And you know what?? I survived.

Actually. I really really enjoyed it.

Obviously there were hard parts.

Traveling was not easy. There are very, very few things that you can find while doing a road trip. In hindsight, it would have been best to pack some food. (see point below). I learned that when you go to Wendy's and ask for a salad for No Cheese, they put cheese on it. Cool.

Secondly, the planning of each and every meal is AWESOME. But it's also time consuming. And sometimes you just don't have time to figure out every morsel that you are going to put in your mouth that week.

Finally. You realize 99% of your social schedule is organized around FOOD AND ALCOHOL. But guess what. You don't need alcohol to have fun. I learned to load up on soda water and lime, and you'll be just fine. AND You'll remember what happened that night (Yeah, I'm talking to you).

And the best parts? Just to name a few:
Clear skin.
Awesome Sleep.
Fun new recipes.
ZERO stomach problems. For real tho'.
You CRAVE water. And good food.
RESULTS. I lost 5 pounds, my workouts felt better and all around feel amazing.

Althoguh I stuffed my face with chips and gauc (and tequila. holla) from Cantina this past weekend once it ended, Whole30 has really made an influence on how I want to live my day-to-day life.

I’m going to work really hard to continue to eliminate a lot of those foods from my diet because it makes me feel SO GOOD.

(And shout out to Harley, who lost 15 pounds and is no longer downing soda or Monster drinks).

So, CHEERS to good health and feeling great.

Have you tried Whole30? What did you think?

{best} Case of the Mondays: Ensley Gilchrist

We all know Mondays suck.
Each week, I will feature a Monday in the life of someone who can provide some comfort/humor/ inspiration to the start of your week.

This week, Meet Ensley Gilchrist!

Position | Company: I am Lower Elementary Teacher at Chantilly Montessori.

5:00am
Alarm goes off. Heeeeey Monday!

5:01am-5:15am
Put in contacts, change into workout clothes, down a glass of lemon water. #boom

5:30am-6:30am
Barre Fusion at Carolina Barre and Core. As hard as it is to get up in the predawn hours, I would MUCH rather workout at 5:30am than 5:30pm. I feel more alert and energized after my workout than I would if I slept that extra hour anyway. #trust.
6:45am-7:15am
Home for the world's fastest shower/coffee/bagel/smoothie. Because I can't function without caffeine and/or massive amounts of food, I have this time down to a science. No one needs a hangry teacher. I set things out and plan the night before so that this part of my morning is quick and efficient. I have my coffeemaker programmed so that it's ready as soon as I get home, and I toss half a bagel in the toaster before I hop in the shower. I even mix up the dry ingredients of my smoothie in my Magic Bullet and store it in the fridge overnight so that all I have to do is add water and go. I've laid out and ironed all of my outfits Sunday night so I step right out of the shower and get dressed. As I sip my coffee I check my work email since I don't like that eating into my morning prep time.
7:15am-7:30am
Arrive at work. I live less than a mile from the school I teach at, which is amazing. I can walk, bike, or drive. Mondays I drive because, well...Monday. I'm also lucky enough to get to bring my dog Brody to work as our "class pet", so he's along for the ride.
7:30-8:45am
The only sweet, blissful hour I'll have to myself for the rest of the day. Since I currently don't have a teaching assistant (thanks NC legislature!) there's twice the work for me to do. I review my lessons for the day and make sure I have all of the materials I need, make copies, replenish supplies, and work on any ongoing projects. I may also have a meeting with a parent or specialist for a struggling student.
8:45am-9:15am
One of my favorite parts of the day: student arrival. (Yes, you read that right!) As a Montessori school, we focus heavily on creating a peaceful environment for ourselves and the children. As students trickle in for this thirty minutes, the lights are off, soft music is playing and everyone is expected to be silent. Seriously. If a child talks they have to put their backpack on and walk all the way back down the hallway and start again. As they come in, we mouth "Good morning" to each other and then everyone reads, writes, or draws at circle. I want to set a good example for my kiddos, so I'm also at circle working silently at this time. I have an awesome teacher planner and generally use this time to plan lessons ahead of time or review a big lesson I have that morning. I never would have believed a class of first, second, and third graders could pull this off, but I think it speaks to how much our souls need quiet time each day. I love looking up from what I'm doing and seeing twenty-three little heads buried in books or creating stories. This time really resets me and gets me excited for a day of teaching!

9:15-9:30am
Morning Circle. If I have an announcement or lesson for the whole group I share it here. I also allow the kids time to make their own announcements (i.e. I'm leaving early to go to the dentist, I'm going to the beach this weekend, I barfed last night) so that they get it off their chests and aren't telling me these things all.day.long.

12:10pm
Work Cycle. A Montessori classroom looks much different than a traditional one, but basically I'm giving lessons to small groups of children while the other students work independently on math, language, science...you name it. Since I don't have an assistant I do have to occasionally stop and prevent kids from dealing Skittles in the bathroom and/or covering their entire face in Scotch tape (true stories).
12:10-12:30pm
Kids are at lunch in the cafeteria and I have a few short moment to myself. My work BFF Kendra is in the classroom next to mine and we generally try to steal a few minutes outside to talk about grown up things.
12:30-1:40pm
Writer's Workshop. My passions are reading and writing, so this is another favorite time for me. I give a short (>10 minute) lesson modeling a writing strategy, then send the kids off to work independently. As they work, I bop around from student to student to conference with them. I love seeing what their little genius minds create!

1:45-2:30pm
Planning. I have forty-five minutes to myself as the kids go to art, music, etc. I generally use this time to read the writing they just completed, provide feedback for them on sticky notes, and make notes for tomorrow's writing lesson. That alone takes the entire planning time and then I'm feverishly putting their journals back in place and running to pick them up on time.

2:40-3:10pm
Recess. Another brain break for me, since I tell kids they aren't allowed to talk to me unless it's an emergency. #notsorry. I stand in the shade and enjoy a few blissful minutes outdoors, interrupted only when children try to play "light sabers" with sticks or get stuck on the monkey bars.
3:15-4:00pm
Read aloud and independent reading. I have a book picked out in advance and a certain reading strategy that I model, then send them off to practice in their own books. I think it's important to model that I'm a reader as well, so many times I'll sit and read while they do. As they become able to read for thirty-plus minutes independently, I'll start moving around the room and conferencing with students.
4:00-4:05pm
Pack up. Another teacher comes and picks up the car riders from my room, leaving me with less than ten students who ride the bus.

4:05-4:15pm
Bus riders are expected to be reading silently until their bus is called. The last student generally leaves my classroom at 4:15 on the dot.

4:15-4:45pm
Another day done! I do small things to prep for tomorrow, make copies, and straighten up. I can't handle anything too mentally taxing at this point since I've been "on" for the past eight hours.
5:00-5:45pm
Come home, change into workout clothes, and take the dog for a walk. This time is like a palette cleanser for me between work and home. I listen to podcasts, appreciate being outside, and use this time to completely decompress from the day.

6:00-7:00pm
"Me" time. I live with my boyfriend and he generally gets home around seven, leaving me with an hour or so of quiet time. Usually I'm in charge of cooking dinner since I'm home first, but on Mondays we eat out (treat yo' self) so I use this time to catch up on Bravo shows, read, or call a girlfriend.

7:00pm
Patrick gets home. Usually he picks up Moe's on Mondays ($6 burritos what whaaaat) but today we're being social and meeting two other couples at a Mexican restaurant (Ruru's!) with $5 margs.
9:00pm
Get home, change into PJs, and right into bed. I'm super strict with myself about getting into bed at 9 on weekdays, since I'm generally up at 5 and my day requires so much energy. I read until I fall asleep, which isn't very long at all. Back at it tomorrow!
